JUSTICE, FREEDOM, PEACE, MEMORY

‘Justice, Freedom, Peace, Memory’ was the first of my immersive works to be completed. The piece was premiered at the Music Matters XXII Symposium at the University of Groningen on June 15, 2018. It is an immersive, interactive musical work that uses audio augmented reality (AAR) to blend the performed music with the soundscape of the performance location; the city centre of Groningen.

'Justice, Freedom, Peace, Memory' is centred around Groningen's Martini Tower. Put on your headphones and walk towards the tower. Do not feel that you have to walk in a straight line. The music will respond to your movements, building to a climax as you approach the tower, and receding as you move away... When you reach the tower, look for the war memorial, 'Sint-Joris en de Draak', by the side of the church. The music will ebb away, leaving you in silence. Behind the memorial you will find a garden and a new set of sounds to listen to. Perhaps spend some time here.

'Justice, Freedom, Peace Memory' explores themes of remembrance and encourages us to see and hear our everyday surroundings in a new way. The work is performed through the Echoes app, which can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play Store

THE SOUNDS OF GRONINGEN

The field recordings used in Justice, Freedom, Peace, Memory were captured in Groningen city centre.

All of these field recordings were incorporated into the final work - some in their raw form, some after various degrees of processing.
