Soundpaths: Manchester

I was commissioned to create two works in the Moston and Harpurhey neighbourhoods of Manchester in the UK. The first of these, ‘Soundpaths: Moston & Harpurhey’, was commissioned by Brighter Sound, SICK! Festival, DutchCulture and The Embassy of The Netherlands in the United Kingdom. It premiered as part of SICK! Festival in April 2021 and was shortlisted for a Manchester Culture Award in the category of ‘Promotion of Health and Wellbeing’ in 2022. The second work, ‘Soundpaths: Boggart Hole Clough’ was commissioned by SICK! Festival, the Oglesby Charitable Trust and Manchester City Council. It premiered as part of SICK! Festival in May 2022.

The funding I received for SPMH allowed me to work directly with the team behind the Echoes app to create a brand new app based on their technology but with additional functionality; we named this app Soundpaths. This app is free to download and use from either the Google Play Store of Apple App Store.

I worked with communities in Moston and Harpurhey to record the hums of nature and the urban landscape and incorporated them into my music, creating an experience that is both new and familiar.
